The objective of the Popwood project was to exploit recent developments of poplar genomic to improve our understanding of genetic and molecular mechanisms controlling vascular development and wood formation and hence engineer transgenic poplars with modified fibbers and wood properties.
In parallel to the genetic and molecular genetic work, the analysis of juvenile poplar fibber and wood properties will be performed and compared to characteristics of nature wood. The main objective is to evaluate the possibilities of using young trees, only a few years old, as a raw material for pulp production, which could offer novel economic.
The role of Innventia in the project was to:
- develop a toolbox for characterisation of young hardwood materials
- analyse the property variations in the existing poplar resource
- evaluate poplars resulting from the project from an industrial perspective
