What is the research programme area about?
We will exploit the synergies between paper chemistry, paper mechanics and papermaking in order to develop resource- and energy-efficient papermaking processes. This includes the use of nanofibrillated cellulose and the possibilities of sheet stratification.
What benefit will the research bring?
A life cycle assessment performed in the EcoTarget project showed that the most effective way to reduce energy consumption is to reduce the fibre content in the product without deteriorating the production quality. Methods for producing stronger paper and board are therefore needed to facilitate efforts to achieve this.
