Paper and board surface

We have tools for characterising paper and board surfaces!

  • Which are the preferred properties of paper/board surfaces for printing?
  • How has the topography of the paper been affected by calendering?
  • Are the edge rolls smooth enough?

The surface of paper and board is extremely important in terms of printing results. By analysing the surface topography in an appropriate way, the printing results can often be predicted. Properties other than topography that may be important include compressibility and absorption properties.

FRT MicroProf – uses chromatic aberration to calculate height variation at high resolution.

 

Print Simulation Tester – simulates the printing nip by compressing the paper and measuring the non-contact spots.

 

Cockling/Waviness – measure large-scale height variations on non-printed and printed paper products.

 

Print-through – measurement both on average and as local variations. *

 

MicroDAT – measures the absorption of micro drops on a paper surface.
