Genetics and tree improvement

Innventia has contributed to many projects related to genetics and tree improvement, in different ways. These are all cooperative projects, managed by experts in the field at universities and institutes.

The Popwood project dealt with genetic improvement of poplars (aspen). Innventia contributed with development of methods for characterisation of young hardwood materials and a description of the natural variability.

Properties of different progeny of Sitka spruce (Picea sichensis) in Scotland have been compared from a sawmilling perspective in cooperation with Forest Research (UK).

Mechanical properties of Norway spruce (Picea abies) and their heritability have been investigated, resulting in a thesis at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Another study on Norway spruce and Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) is soon concluded with a thesis at NCSU (US).

Large numbers of samples from Scots pine (Pinus silvestris) have been analyse in a project with SLU (Sweden) as a basis for relating properties (traits) with gene sequences previously mapped. An even larger investigation related to Norway spruce is in its planning phase.
